Kiwi Shorts - One Act Play Season

The Private War of Corporal Cooper

By John Broughton

Chook Chook

By Fiona Farrell

The Private War of Corporal Cooper and Chook Chook are both New Zealand plays by two well known writers. Both plays were directed by Annette Thomson.

The season: Thu-Sat 20-22 Apr, Wed-Sat 26-29 Apr

In The Private War of Corporal Cooper, we meet Sister Mary Bartholomew, a Catholic nun in 1914 New Zealand who is knitting socks for the war effort. She decides to put her name in one of them - they reach Corporal Cooper in France who writes back, a friendship is struck up, he doesn't know she is a nun. Poignant, spiritual and dramatic, a lovely play for the Easter/Anzac time of the year.

Chook Chook is a hilarious look at life in a battery hen house. Valmai, an older chicken tries to tell Chrisssy that you just get on with things and don't think of roosters or the outside world. Bron arrives full of revolutionary vigour, Georgia has been in an experiment where she saw her own chickens and mated with roosters which she found all a bit of a bore. Half chicken, half women this play delighted those with a sense of the bizarre all whilst recognising their own lives in the process!
